Obiettivi formativi
An enterprise is a dynamic structure of people and resources organized to reach a goal.An innovation is an invention used by many, i.e. successfully put to market.
This course will cover how to set-up a tech company from scratch and start growing, focusing on digital products and services, and with an international span.
We will start from the reasons each of us may have to start a company, will cover shareholder agreements, rights, duties, incentives of each player, and corporate governance. Following, we will look into the workings of finance for start-ups: business angels, venture capitalists, private equity funds, accelerators; how they work, think, and decide; seen from the entrepreneur point of view. An important section of the course will focus on product go-to-market and digital marketing, through real business examples and hands on on technical instruments.
This will be a very practical course, held by a serial entrepreneur with a strong international approach EU-USA. By its end, students will be equipped to start their own company.

- Yvon Chouinard - Let my people go surfing.
- Mark Andreessen - Why software is eating the world.
- Peter Thiel - Da Zero a Uno.
- Ben Horowitz - The Hard Thing About Hard Things.
- Geoffrey Moore - Crossing the Chasm.
- Eric Ries - The lean Startup.
- David Heinemeier Hansson e Jason Fried - Rework.
- Brad Feld e Jason Mandelson - Startup e venture capital.
- Guy Kawasaki - The 10 20 30 rule.
- Steve Blank e Bob Dorf - Startupper. Guida alla crezione di imprese innovative. Utile il modello di Market Discovery e Market Validation.
- David Vise e Mark Malseed - The Google Story.
- Walter Isaacson - Steve Jobs.
For the forthcoming Academic Year, I am preparing a text book. Although for now written in Italian. It may not be finalized, and in the latter case will be handed to students for free in a Work in Progress version. Please find an introduction to digital marketing, useful to create your Growth Machine, in the short article I wrote in my blog. I will progressively add additional articles on related matters.
In addition, the course will be accompanied by the teacher's slides which will refer to the following articles or books. Not all readings are required, but check my comments and the tabs on Amazon linked, then choose:
- Yvon Chouinard - Let my people go surfing. Read it because it is the story of a great adventure: the creation and growth of the Patagonia brand written by its founder. Read it also because it is a wonderful example of branding and, for some, of green-washing. Inspiring. Better than many novels.
- Mohammad Yunus - Il banchiere dei poveri. A professor of economics turned entrepreneur and philanthropist. The history of a company, the invention of Micro-credit, the creation of the concept of Social Enterprise. Inspiring for those who study economics and want to build a company. This too is better than many, many novels. Yunus later won the Nobel Prize.
- Mark Andreessen - Why software is eating the world. This is a 2011 aricle that made history. Written by Mark Andreessen, the inventor of the Internet browser, founder of Netscape and then of perhaps the most influential Venture Capital fund in the world: Andreessen-Horowitz. This is a must-read for anyone who wants to do business today, and Andreessen is an absolute myth. Those who do not read in English can use Google Translate.
- Pether Thiel - Da Zero a Uno. Thiel is one of PayPal's cofounders. Less famous outside the US than his colleague Elon Musk, Thiel is still a hugely successful investor and wrote this book during his Entrepreneurship course at Stanford University, along with one of his students. We are here only interested in some parts of the text.
- Ben Horowitz - The Hard Thing About Hard Things. I found it quite boring, but the short text on "The Struggle" is a work of art. I am not aware of an Italian version.
- Geoffrey Moore - Crossing the Chasm. A great go-to-market classic and a must-read for those who really want to market an innovative product or service. We will touch on the fundamental concepts during the course.
- Eric Ries - The lean Startup. Another great classic, this time about building a company in general and available in its Italian version. Entrepreneurs should definitely read at least the first half. It contains concepts and a vocabulary that is common among us today.
- David Heinemeier Hansson e Jason Fried - Rework. An amusing and quick book, with so much wisdom often disguised as banality. Don't underestimate it. Read it in the coming years, perhaps in your second year as an entrepreneur.
- Brad Feld e Jason Mandelson - Startup e venture capital. A very technical book on venture capital deals. What to look for in the term sheets, the mistakes to avoid, the questions to ask, how to distinguish who is a friend from who really is not. For whom in the team feels more "Finance and Organization" than "Product and Communication". As long as you are at least two.
- Guy Kawasaki - The 10 20 30 rule. Article as brief as useful on how to present to potential investors. It's read in 10 minutes and delivers value for years.
- Steve Blank and Bob Dorf - The Startup Owner's manual. Useful model of Market Discovery and Market Validation.
- David Vise e Mark Malseed - The Google Story. Novel-style report on the birth of Google. Useful to understand the inner working of the famous search engine and the deeper mechanics of the Internet.
- Walter Isaacson - Steve Jobs. One of the most famous biographies of Apple co-founder. A must-read for entrepreneurs, a good read for mom-n-pop to better understand this tech world of ours.
- TED Talks: The Official TED Guide to Public Speaking. Public speaking book suggested by our Guest Lecturer of Improvisation Theater Mauro Simolo during his Public Speaking lecture in 2019-20 (thank you Mauro).
